Tonhalle
Originally built in 1926 as a planetarium, the Tonhalle Düsseldorf is one of Germany’s most beautiful concert halls thanks to its unique, listed architecture. A spectacular ‘indoor starry sky’ in the blue dome of the concert hall makes concerts at the Tonhalle a visual experience as well. Around 350 events with over 300,000 guests per year make the Tonhalle a great forum for culture and a place of encounter. The Tonhalle is home to the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra and its Orchestra Academy, and also harbours a youth symphony orchestra, an under-16 orchestra, a children’s orchestra and an audience orchestra all under one roof. The Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra performs in the Tonhalle several times per month, for example in the ‘Sternzeichen’ symphony concert series. The Tonhalle also regularly hosts major international stars of the classical music industry. A wide variety of musical styles such as jazz, chanson and soul, as well as cabaret events, complete the programme of the ‘Planetarium of Music’.
At the Tonhalle, we firmly believe that culture includes a social responsibility – especially when it comes to one of the most important issues of our time: climate protection. Environmental sustainability is a central pillar of our values. That is why the Tonhalle has set out to become a ‘green concert hall’. As a cultural institution with a wide reach, it is important to us to promote awareness of environmental protection and sustainable action among our team and our visitors. We are already successfully reducing our ecological footprint through numerous measures and are constantly striving to become even more sustainable. The Tonhalle team and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra work hand in hand in our efforts to protect the climate. The orchestra is a member of the ‘Orchestras of Change’ (Orchester des Wandels) initiative, which is actively committed to the protection of climate, nature and species. Together, we have already taken many steps towards becoming a ‘green Tonhalle’, but we are still a long way from our goal…
