The Twisted Tree in the heart of Satu Mare is a Japanese Acacia. It is a beloved landmark for the people of the city, a witness to the city’s changing times, a living symbol of endurance, creativity and memory. The area around the tree in the city centre was in the past the home to a vibrant Jewish neighbourhood. Around 90 years ago a local botanist resident there cultivated a garden with rare species of plants and trees. In 1944 the Jews from the area were taken to Auschwitz, their houses occupied by others, and in 1970 the whole neighbourhood collapsed and a new centre was built. This twisted acacia is the last living remnant of that garden.

A workshop was held recently with students from the Satu Mare Arts High School and these are some of the results.
